Solidarity with the Ukrainian people

Against imperialist interventions – Against the EU-IMF pillaging through Memoranda of Understanding

ANTARSYA addresses a message of solidarity to the Ukrainian people who are going through difficult times.

The government change brought about in a coup-d’état manner that came after a political conflict with hundreds killed and thousands wounded in Kiev, is the result of a relentless conflict between groups torn by the economic and political oligarchy that has been ransacking the country after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The root causes of the crisis and conflicts can be found in decades of poverty, along with the attack on social rights and democratic freedoms by the Yanukovych government.

At this juncture, we are witnessing a clash between, the nationalist armed militias with a fascist ideology and Nazi origins, on one hand, who are supported and equipped by the EU and the US and, on the other hand, the state repressive forces of Yanukovych’s authoritarian regime supported by Russia.

The people of Ukraine find themselves in straitjacket in two imperialisms; That of Russia wanting to preserve by any means its political and economic dominance in the region and that of the EU, with Germany and the U.S. in the leading role, which through the connection with the EU and NATO attempts the annexation of territories, states and economies in the chariot of the European and American capital respectively.

The first coup organized by the EU, spearheaded and led by the fascist extreme right and neo-Nazis forces the masks to drop and proves that the EU not only does not guarantee democracy in Europe, but spearheads its undermining.

The first indications from the new Ukrainian regime, as well as the EU/US position point to an attempt at chaining the country in the shackles NATO, IMF and EU-imposed Memoranda, along with attacking the democratic and social rights of the Ukrainian people. “Europeanization” and “reforms” will be nothing more than a new ransacking of Ukraine’s natural resources and wealth that will only benefit local oligarchs, and US and EU capital. This development makes possible the very explosion of civil war, and the division and dissolution of the country.

ANTARSYA denounces the reactionary manipulation to outlaw Ukraine’s Communist Party by the EU- and US-supported government. ANTARSYA stands alongside struggling forces, leftists, communists and anti-fascists, who, in difficult circumstances, are trying with toil and selflessness, to bring to the forefront of the battle taking place in the streets, the real problems of the Ukrainian people.

Hope lies in the struggle against fascism, against the civil war, imperialist intervention and capitalist ransacking.

Decision of Teachers’ Union ‘Aristotle’ in Greece about police demand for data collection from schools

Decision of Teachers’ Union ‘Aristotle’

Athens, 11.2.2014

There is no end to the descent of totalitarianism! The letter of the General Police Directorate of Attica for data collection from school units must be withdrawn now!

A junta inspired order was sent to police stations in Attica by the General Police Directorate of Attica (GADA). According to the order, police stations are required to contact school headmasters and arrange meetings in order to record problems and to compose detailed reports which record the problems and needs which are of the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Public Order and the police.

The issue is very serious and dangerous. Political intervention is required and the order must be withdrawn now.

With this document they are pursuing unheard of goals! On the above pretexts they are aiming to turn headmasters into police officers, to establish a climate of terrorism and policing at school units and to negate the roles of teachers, asking them to report offences that haven’t yet been committed!!! Teachers are educators, not policemen! Problems in education are not resolved with the assistance of policemen and prosecutors or with invitations to headmasters to snitch on their pupils.

Teachers and headmasters seek to maintain an educational climate at their schools and to resolve problems in an environment of safety, trust and understanding not in a climate of terrorism and fear! School areas are places of protection and care for our underage pupils. Problems are resolved in this spirit not with policing and enforcement. The educational community has the ability to distinguish those rare situations where police assistance is needed and to request it.

We demand that this document and order are withdrawn NOW. We call on the political forces to take a stand on this important issue of democracy at schools!

FIGHTING FOR FREE AND DEMOCRATIC EDUCATION

Last Wednesday on 29.01.2014 students from five universities of Birmingham and other students had gathered to protest against the big increases in fees and against the reductions to the salaries of the teaching staff (!!!) They shouted various slogans and some students at the end of the protest, entered the building Aston Webb University in the great hall and clock tower and hung banners which are referred their demands.

While the students tried to go away from the spot, they were surrounded by the police and the security of the university. It is estimated that approximately 100 people protesters were faced with police for four hours. There were arrested 13 students- protesters and detained for more than 24 hours in police departments of Birmingham.

The National Campaign Against Cuts and Fees (NCACAF) said that the arrests were all for refusing to give their names to the police. Universities everywhere are losing the argument on staff exploitation and privatization – and the only argument we saw from them today was brute force.

According to the university decision, it is banned the access for these students on the university campus and in all academic activities. That inhibits their student status and causes with that un-democratic way terror to all people who are struggling and fighting, for not to exclude the children of working and poor families from universities.

Violence, intimidation and cops on campus against students. Prohibition of freedom of speech and expression. Students with brutal knowledge just of their subject, without political crisis who live dormant in today’s harsh reality that we face, and they are easily embeddable from the system.

This is not the university we want. Students, teachers, workers have common interests.

WE DEMAND TO BE TAKEN BACK THESE SUSPENSIONS AND ASK IN THE INCLUSION OF STUDENTS AFFECTED THE UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY.

WE REQUIRE:

  • To be lifted now the decision to exclude students from throughout the university to continue their studies.
  • An end to bullying and victimization of students.
  • Direct and democratic education of all decisions taken have reason teaching staff and students.
  • No more pay cuts and staff layoffs. Universities should accept the demands of the fees set by the union staff.
  • Free education for all students
  •  Delete the debt from student loans.

The End of benefits for EU migrants?

The Home Secretary, Theresa May, announced further measures, on behalf of the Coalition Government, for the limits of EU migrants’ benefits access. In line with the Prime Minister David Cameron, she stated that EU migrants will no longer be allocated to Jobseeker Allowance (JSA) and Housing Benefit unless they prove they contribute to the economy. As she said, by this way “we will clamp down on those trying to exploit the system”!

The first step to restrain the benefits access started on the 1st of January 2014. Since then, according to the new rules, no migrant is allowed to take benefits unless they have lived in UK for 3 months, and if they haven’t found any job after 6 months of stay their benefit access will be withheld. The Coalition seems decisive to destroy the protective frame of the new immigrants as a whole. By this way, they are trying to create a suffocating environment for those who have just arrived to the UK and are making their first steps, setting up their lives again.

More specifically, the Jobseeker Allowance (JSA) is a supportive measure for people who have recently arrived to UK, in the form of £56.80 per week for a single person under 25 or £71.70 for 25 and over, based on your present income sources, and savings which need to be less than £16.000. Housing Benefit is given to people who are also on low income/claiming benefits, who pay rent and whose savings should also be less than £16.000, and varies in amount between Councils. In addition to the above, by the 1st of April, the government will implement a further change: for those immigrants who lose their jobs, Jobseeker Allowance and Housing Benefit will no longer be available. The thought behind that is that EU migrants “should demonstrate they have been putting something back in the economy in order to claim benefits”, as the Home Secretary said.

Their aim couldn’t be more obvious. In view of the impending European elections and the increasing influence of the far right-wing parties, such as the UK Independence Party (UKIP), the Coalition is desperate to find a victim to blame for all the economic and social problems their policies have given birth to. By categorising the workers in UK nationals and migrants, they are trying to separate the working class so as to lessen our power. There is no other way for them to impose their austerity measures. In addition to that, we listened with great interest the recent delusion of the Conservatives accusing the ex-Government of Labours that, between 2003-2010, priority was given to foreigners rather than UK nationals and as they said, now this is reversed and 90% of the new jobs are given to British people and only 10% to migrants! They are driving us back to the dark era when “British people were fighting for British jobs”.

No matter how much effort the Coalition makes to persuade the British people in regard to immigrants’ benefits as the source of their poverty, this is far from reality. The truth is that since the very past, immigration has been a beneficial factor for the UK economy and culture as well. Not only hasn’t the UK lost earnings, but also through immigration, numerous workers and scientists have contributed to the production of wealth of this country without the UK spending any pound for them. Secondly, the new measures reveal us that the migrants are not the only victims: Loss of the Jobseeker Allowance includes not only the EU migrants, but also UK nationals who used to live abroad and have just returned to the country. It couldn’t be more obvious that this measure will start from the migrants and a few British and then, provided it’s implemented, sooner or later it will encompass all the UK nationals as well.

In view of the above, our response needs to be prompt, massive and loud. The right is on our side, the side of all the people who were forced to move from their country and now work abroad. It’s us and the British workers who produce the wealth in UK and we share common interests for unemployment and house benefits, for better salaries, for high quality, public, free Health and Education system. It’s only us and the British workers who can stop them from destroying our lives.  Fighting for maintaining and enhancing the migrant benefits is a common fight among all the Europeans who live and work in the UK, a common fight among all the immigrants. It’s a common fight among us and the British people, a common fight of the whole working movement in the UK. Venceremos!

“ERT” (Greek public television and radio) went silent…-Now it’s the time for its “owner” to speak!

During the darkest hours of the night, riot police of the miserable coalition government invaded ERT’s headquarters at 4.20 am, plunging ERT into darkness for the second time.

The reaction of the people was immediate! As ERT’s real owner, hundreds of people hastened to guard and protect the public wealth in solidarity with the fight of its workers.

After preparing the climate methodically with threats and ridiculous claims of “dangerous radiation”, today they attacked the voice which by continuously informing the public for five months showed in practice a different path. The path of dignity, collectivity and struggle.

The totalitarian invasion of the headquarters, a few days before the anniversary of the uprising against the military junta in Greece (17th November ’73), comes just a day after the scandalous law that gifts digital transmission permits to the channel owners! The lifting of the embargo on DT (ERTs’ replacement) by DIMAR also gave a “go ahead” to the invasion. The government of Samaras is presenting its’ credentials to the Troika. The final moments of the audio documents remind of breathtaking events of the past…

The suppression forces of the parliamentary totalitarianism are trying to keep people away by use of tear-gas. They will not succeed however. ANTARSYA stands by the side of the fighting workers of ERT in the struggle for free information, against the mass layoffs, for the current need for FOOD-EDUCATION-FREEDOM (the main slogan of the 1973 uprising).

Now is the time for the worker’s and peoples’ movement and the radical  left to fight back,-united and decisively – for the overthrow of the cannibalistic, reactionary policies of the government the EU and the IMF, the overthrow of the ND-PASOK government and any government which implements such policies.

Everyone to the fight to protect ERT!

Everyone to the demonstrations that ERT’s workers are calling!

We call all the trade unions to decide for strikes in solidarity with ERT’s struggle. We call all the people to be at the Aghia Paraskevi square today at 4pm

Political decision of the founding assembly of ANTARSYA UK

Major developments have been taking place in the whole world in the last 5 years. On the one hand the crisis that emerged in 2008 has hit the capitalist production by the falling profit rate. The governments in the Western World and especially in the EU and the Eurozone have made efforts to restore the profit rate of the capitalists through the implementation of huge austerity policies and budget cuts obliging the workers, the unemployed and the youth to sacrifice working rights and to pay for the crisis that they did not cause. The attacks from the capital, the governments, the fascists, the IMF, the EU and all supranational mechanisms, take advantage of the capitalist crisis to pass a sweeping capitalist restructuring.
